The government stipulates possession of at least three cents land for a family to be eligible for the housing schemes. But in the state of Kerala there are more than 2.5 lakh families not having a piece of land. Hence Welfare Party of India organised an agitation called ” land for land less”. The land agitation was one of the biggest stirs in the political sphere of Kerala. The party identified lands encroached by land mafias and waste/ barren/ uncultivable lands with government and demanded distribution of such lands to the landless. The issue was neglected by the mainstream parties in the beginning but they were forced to fall in line with us later. Welfare Party demanded a comprehensive land law to be framed to retrieve the encroached lands and a model draft has been submitted to the government. Finally the assembly has passed an order to distribute the unused lands with the government to the landless people. As a result more than 3000 landless families have got land and many of them have constructed houses.
The struggle will continue till all the landless get a piece of land…
